THE SHADOW OF 75 still hangs over us all . . .

few of your are old enough to have been there, i suspect.

i had been in prison two years as a jw conscientious objector when the exciting news about 1975 spread like wildfire.. .

i was paroled from prison in 1969 and immediately began pioneering.

Terry, so very, very true.

Certainly by the time midnight rolled around on the 31st of December 1975 (if not before), everybody from Crazy Fred downwards had developed a collective case of amnesia about this date.

What a contrast this was to the situation of the previous nine years - when the arrogant #%^&s even reckoned they had that scripture about "nobody knows the day or the hour" covered. One of the many magazine articles that were written about this date in 1968 specifically warned us that this was "no time to hide behind" that passage of scripture.

If this wasn't putting themselves above the bible, then I don't know what is!

Finally time to move on

i have finally reached the point where i can forget that i was ever involved with such a $!%* cult as jehovahs witnesses.

(a situation that has taken over 20 years to achieve).. this discussion board certainly helped in this process, and i want to thank everybody for their support over the time that i have been a member both of this site and the old www.jehovahs-witness.com website (where i used the acronym reefton jack).

it is now, though, time to move on with my life, so i will say my farewells to everybody.. bill .

How was it when you were a JW as a kid?

whats worse than being an adult jw?

when i was a kid i always had a bad concience all the time.

i believed i would not survive armageddon for the fact that i didn't like going to service and i didnt like going to the meetings.

I was eight years old when my grandmother began that part of the JW indoctrination process that they like to call the "Free Home Bible Study".

At his mother's insistence, my father attended parts of a few assemblies,including the public talks. Significantly, he picked up immediately that it was pointless bringing children along to such events (this was about the time the "Babylon the Great" book was released) - as the content was clean over their heads. Was he right about that!

Nonetheless, my father was placed under much pressure from his parents to bring us three children along to the meetings. Luckily for us all, he resisted.

For that, I can't thank him enough!

I wholeheartedly agree with his later description of the JW routine of five meetings a week (as it was then), plus Circuit Assemblies, District Conventions, Special Assemblies, International Assemblies etc - with mandatory attendance of both children as well as adults - as "inhuman."

Witnesses - Ever Wondered Why You're So Tired After Assemblies/Meetings?

recently shared this with me.. they compared the tiredness they felt after attending an assembly and meetings, and noted how much worse it was than actually working and studying hard for hours for their secular employment!

That, and the constant badgering of the little ones to sit down, sit still, and be quiet. I don't miss the days of hanging out in the halls and watching parents whaling on their kids - spanking them mercilessly - usually because the parents were so stressed out and wound up by the oppressive nature of the message.

It is straight out inhumane to expect small children to sit quietly through just one morning of an assembly - let alone the afternoon as well - then the day after that, and the day after that again.

Statistically, we are told that two out of every three of those raised in "The Truth" end up giving it way. It is a miracle that they even manage to hang onto the one and three that do remain.

I know for a certain that if I had been raised as a JW, they wouldn't have seen me for dust - just as soon as I could have bolted for it!

A lot more animals (including Hobbits!), than people:

- although the situation is not as extreme as it was in the 1970s and early 80s, when there were 60 to 70 million head of sheep in the country, versus a population of barely three million people. (At the same time as this, prime minister Robert Muldoon was quietly trying to reduce the human population. He made immigration more difficult, and turned a blind eye to the significant numbers who were emigrating).

after the resurrection i mean.

the answer i was told is that the gb had calculated that all the people who have ever lived could all fit on to the isle of wight?!.

He's right, those deserts have a huge amount of water in their aquifers:

Whether or not, though, there is enough water there to irrigate the entire expanse of desert is another matter.

In the case of the Australian deserts, there certainly isn't. As an example, the site I was involved with (BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam mine) had to run a line of artesian bores out as far as 200 km away from the plant, just to bring in sufficient water for a mineral processing operation. That bore line could not deliver anywhere near enough water to turn the arid country in between into arable land (even if the bore water had been suitable for irrigation purposes - which it wasn't).

This was accompanied by a small movement at the time to "green the desert". The belief was that you could pump water into the desert, plant trees, and soon it would no longer be the desert. Claims were made that the desert was so fertile that crops could grow overnight.

It is not just the JWs that have come up with the "irrigating the deserts" story, either. I can remember once reading a Plain Truth magazine, in which the author (presumably H.W. Armstrong) made the claim that there are large bodies of water trapped in the ground beneath all the world's deserts - and thereby inferring that irrigation should not be much of a difficulty.

Presumably, he got that idea from Australia's Great Artesian Basin, and then extrapolated this onto all other arid regions in the world. Even much of the water in the GAB is toxic. At the site I worked at on the edge of the desert in South Australia, the artesian water was seven times as saline as seawater. To make it in any way usable required a three-stage filtration process (including Reverse Osmosis filtration). They might as well have just said that, as most of the earth's surface is covered by oceans, irrigation / water supply should never be an issue!

He certainly terrorised us all in S.E. Queensland, when he went on a mission to re-invigorate "The Work", which had somewhat gone into decline during the immediate post-1975 years.

No - I never wondered why I always came back from assemblies/conventions in a worn-out state:

- to me, that was never, ever a mystery.

To steal a line from William Shakespeare, the JW assemblies and conventions (not to mention their meetings in general) all come under the heading of Much Ado About Nothing !
